Short answer: Revenue's Form CG1 (the 2025 version we read, for the year ended 31 December 2025) has no separate line for crypto. Its asset table lists shares, land, premises, funds and "(k) Other Assets"; we found no Revenue text saying which line crypto-assets go in, so confirm that before filing. The sequence of lines on losses, exemption and rates, however, is clear and useful when you prepare your own calculation.
The form's key facts (2025 form)
- The return covers gains 1 January to 31 December 2025; filing deadline 31 October 2026; if you submit on or before 31 August 2026 Revenue calculates the self-assessment for you.
- A surcharge of 5% (within two months of the deadline) or 10% (later) applies to late returns (late return).
- The obligation to make a return exists even where no tax is due because of reliefs or losses.
- Payment dates for 2025: 15 December 2025 (disposals 1 January to 30 November) and 31 January 2026 (December disposals). For 2026, the same pattern is expected (dates); the 2026 form was not read.
Order of the calculation (lines 10 to 23)
| Line | What |
|---|---|
| 10 | Chargeable gains in the year |
| 11 | Losses in the year (give details if any loss is to a connected person) |
| 14 | Chargeable gains net of current-year losses |
| 17 | Unused losses from prior years offset against gains |
| 18 | Personal exemption, maximum €1,270, not transferable between spouses or civil partners. The form notes that losses, including losses forward, must be used first |
| 19 | Net chargeable gain |
| 21-23 | Losses to carry forward |
| Lines 24 and 25 then split net gains by rate and by period (1 January to 30 November, and December). The 2025 form shows 33%; for disposals on or after 7 October 2026 a 31% rate is expected per Revenue guidance (Budget 2027), still to be legislated (rate). |
Made-up worked example
Gains €9,000; current-year loss €1,500; prior-year unused loss €500. Line 14: €7,500. Line 17: €500, leaving €7,000. Line 18: exemption €1,270, leaving a net chargeable gain of €5,730 (more examples).
Other lines worth knowing
- Line 2: tick if any disposal was between connected parties or not at arm's length.
- Line 5: tick if market value was substituted for the cost of acquisition of an asset disposed of (relevant to gifts: gifting crypto).
Who files this form?
Revenue's forms and the chargeable-person rules decide whether you file CG1 or include gains in an income tax return; see PAYE employees and register and pay.
FAQ
Do I need to list every crypto trade?
The form asks for the number of disposals and aggregate consideration by asset type; Revenue's record-keeping rules require the underlying records (records).
Can I use my exemption if I have a loss?
The exemption only reduces a gain; it can't create a loss and isn't carried forward.
What we could not verify
- Which line of the form crypto-assets belong in ("Other Assets" is our reading only).
- The 2026 version of Form CG1 and its deadlines, rate lines and any 31% line (expected; not published in the sources read).
- Online (ROS/MyAccount) screens: not read; they may differ from the paper form.
- Whether the 31% rate has been legislated.
